Construction Zone

Be careful!  Caution!  There's a busy, math construction zone in Room 200.

For their unit on volume, 5th grade teachers, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Bersch, Ms. Moroni, and Mrs. Lizarazo planned a hands-on, real-life activity that put their students in the middle of a construction zone.  Some of the brainstorming for the idea came from a "Get-Your-Teach-On" Conference, attended last year by 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Michelle Moore.  Similar ideas were also found on Pinterest teaching sites.  The 5th grade team, through collaborative planning, created this culminating activity which also upholds our school mission and vision related to the 5 Pillars of Magnet Schools and 8 Essentials of A+ (Arts Integration) Schools, especially Innovative Curriculum, High Quality Instruction, and Experiential Learning.

Throughout the day, students acted and even dressed like construction workers.  Home Depot donated aprons, and teachers received Donors Choose grants for the safety glasses.

The Math Construction Zone was fully equipped with orange cones, measuring tape, caution signs and more.  During this activity, students were fully and highly engaged as well as having fun.  They authentically learned how measurement, volume and many other math skills are used in daily life or even future jobs and careers.

P.L.A.Y. Music is Back!

P.L.A.Y. Music

We are so excited to have the PLAY Music Program of the Winston-Salem Symphony as a community partner again this year. Each Monday and Wednesday after school, approximately 40 students in grades K-5 meet in small groups to learn to play violin.  P.L.A.Y. Music, (the Piedmont Learning Academy for Youth,) is the Wiston-Salem Symphony's El Sistema-inspired program that aims to teach 'the whole child,' head, heart and hands.  The curriculum integrates the students' backgrounds and heritage as well as promotes childhood literacy.

ArtistCorp Arts Engaged

We are so excited to continue our partnership with the University of North Carolina School of the Arts ArtistCorp Arts Engaged Program.  This program places accomplished artists/musicians in schools to work with high-needs students. Members of ArtistCorp work directly with Pre-Kindergarten to high school students to strengthen community and learning through the use of music, movement, acting and art.  This year, we are fortunate to have 14 ArtistCorp Members working at our school.  We have an Integration Team that works with 6 classroom teachers to collaborate on integration lessons and activities.  We have a group of ArtistCorp Members who work with PreK in the Vivaldi Project to teach students how to play the violin.  We also have a small group of Members who work with band, orchestra and art through team teaching, one-on-one student rehearsals, set design, creation of props, and more.
