Literacy Night Treasure Hunt

Aarrgh Mateys! Literacy Night at Diggs-Latham was an exciting night of fun as families followed a treasure map around the school to complete tasks and engage in reading-related activities.

“Students and their families had a great time. We received so much positive feedback as families completed the treasure hunt of literacy,” shared Principal Dr. Cassandra Dobson.

Annually, Diggs-Latham holds curriculum nights that invite parents to visit the school and review what their children are learning. As the committee met to plan this year’s Literacy Night, they decided to mix things up and make it as engaging and collaborative as possible.

As families arrived in a lobby decorated with pirate flags, seashells, and driftwood, they signed in and received a treasure map that led them to stops and stations around the school. Points of interest on the map included the book fair, their grade level classes, and literacy games in the gym.

The night ended with a storybook character costume contest.  First prize went to a student who made his own miniature treehouse statue to represent the book The Magic Treehouse. Other winners included Stitch, a Crocodile, and Spider-Man. A few staff members were dressed in pirate-like attire, and everyone left with a wealth of treasure in the form of knowledge, books, and an enjoyable time of learning. Shiver Me Timbers!

Living Rhythms

We were pleased to host "Living Rhythms," an Arts-in-Education Program of Tam Tam Mandingue Dejembe Academy. Instructors spent two full days with us and offered hands-on workshops to all grade levels throughout the day in conjunction with the Arts Team.

"With an authentic imported drum for every student, these powerful educational programs immerse students in both the music and dance of West Africa."

"Participants learn rhythms and songs that represent the traditions of several African ethnic groups, then learn dances that historically accompany the musical selections. Strong emphasis is placed on the traditional West African values of respect, community and teamwork. Living Rhythms workshops broaden students’ understanding of our increasingly interdependent world, and encourage them to embrace a life of critical thinking."

Advisors led students through a full election process. Students campaigned with posters and video messages. The student body voted. Ballets were officially tallied, and winners were announced. Advisors and the Student Council are now looking for ways to lead and serve the school in special events. They raised money at Fall Festival by selling corn dogs; they plan to assist with the book fair next week.

Student Council has several on-going and upcoming projects including Birthday Grams, Thankful Grams, and the Penny Campaign in conjunction with Samaritan Ministries. Student Council plans to help staff and students celebrate their birthdays daily with candy grams and offer staff and students an opportunity to say thank you to individuals with thankful grams. The penny campaign will go directly to Samaritan Ministries to help support those in need in our city.

Thank you advisors for your hard work and dedication; thank you students for your willingness to serve.

Magnet Schools Showcase

The annual WSFCS Magnet Schools Showcase was a huge success. We showcased new Marketing materials and our recent awards at our table. The Arts Team & 5th grade TAG took the stage performing “Paradise Island,” a song composed by our Band Teacher, Mr. Sigler, for Band, Orchestra, and Dance students, under the direction of Mr. Sigler, Mr. Mullikin, and Miss Allison.

The Choice and Magnet Showcase officially opens the annual magnet application season.  Perspective parents and students visit our booth at the showcase as well as begin to visit and tour the school as they make decisions for school for next year.

Our booth this year reflected our school colors, black and orange, our mascot, a tiger, and our Magnet Pathway theme, Visual and Performing Arts.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is always an exciting Spirit Week in Tiger Nation.

This year, our guidance counselor, Mrs. Winfield, planned a thematic week that gave students and staff opportunities to dress up to represent the message for the day.

For the first day, Tigers were "Red-y" to make good choices and wore red.

On day two, everyone wore superhero or princess attire to show that we have the POWER to make good choices.

Students and staff also wore favorite sports team jerseys to show drug-free pride.

During the fourth day, we wore fall colors representing "FALLING" in love with healthy choices.

Our Red Ribbon Spirit Week ended with our school family wearing black and orange to show our School Spirit.

All-County Dance

Congratulations to Dance Teacher, Ms. Allison, and members of our 5th grade TAG Group who performed in All-County Dance at Reynolds High School.

Our school was the only elementary school to participate among middle and high school dance groups.

Our students performed an original, Caribbean style dance to "Paradise Island," music composed by our Band Teacher, Mr. Sigler

Fall Festival

We have the best PTA, (Parent Teacher Association,) and this year, PTA brought back our annual Fall Festival event.

Fall Festival was a huge success. Reagan Distance, (track and cross country team,) volunteered to decorate the weekend before the event, and they managed game stations during the festival.

Each grade level planned a game, including a spooky room by Specialists, which was a huge hit.

Student artist volunteers from Reynolds and Parkland High managed the face painting station.

Students and families enjoyed a cake walk, snacks, and food trucks as well.

The evening ended with the basket raffle and the costume contest.
