For their unit on volume, 5th grade teachers, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Bersch, Ms. Moroni, and Mrs. Lizarazo planned a hands-on, real-life activity that put their students in the middle of a construction zone. Some of the brainstorming for the idea came from a "Get-Your-Teach-On" Conference, attended last year by 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Michelle Moore. Similar ideas were also found on Pinterest teaching sites. The 5th grade team, through collaborative planning, created this culminating activity which also upholds our school mission and vision related to the 5 Pillars of Magnet Schools and 8 Essentials of A+ (Arts Integration) Schools, especially Innovative Curriculum, High Quality Instruction, and Experiential Learning.
Throughout the day, students acted and even dressed like construction workers. Home Depot donated aprons, and teachers received Donors Choose grants for the safety glasses.
The Math Construction Zone was fully equipped with orange cones, measuring tape, caution signs and more. During this activity, students were fully and highly engaged as well as having fun. They authentically learned how measurement, volume and many other math skills are used in daily life or even future jobs and careers.
