Arts-In-Education Week

Arts in Education Week is a national celebration recognizing the transformative power of the arts in education.  Arts education, comprising a rich array of disciplines including dance, music, theatre, media arts, literature, design, and visual arts, is a core academic subject and an essential element of a complete and balanced education.  This year is the 10th Anniversary of the Celebration.

Even though we are currently virtual, we planned a week of celebrations, events, activities and social media tributes in celebration of the Arts.  We are very fortunate and excited that we are an A+ Magnet School that teaches through the arts and offers a variety of Arts classes daily.

Students were invited to participate in an Essay and Poster Contest to illustrate or write about "Why Arts-In-Education Week is Important or Meaningful" to them.

In the middle of the week, we participated in the virtual, National Talk from "Americans for the Arts" in honor of Arts-in-Education Week.

Our school Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts stayed alive and busy throughout the week with photos, videos and other tributes of how the Arts impact our students and teachers.

Arts Specialists as well as a few classroom and Special Ed teachers created tribute video clips that explained how the arts daily impact their instruction and support academic learning for a broad range of children.

International Dot Day: September 2020

International Dot Day is a celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration.  It started with a teacher and is based on Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot.  The Celebration began on September 15, 2009 and is celebrated annually.

"The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe."

Each year, schools, teachers, students, families, groups and organizations hold unique activities and events to celebrate how each of us make our marks on the world.

Our new media coordinator, Mrs. Alisha Huskey, invited classes and teachers to participate in "Dot Day." Mrs. Huskey and a couple other teachers shared their "dots" they created artistically as well as a brief description of how they are making a mark on children and individuals in their world.

Dr. Dobson, Our Principal

Dr. Cassandra Dobson began serving as our principal in June, and this 2020-2021 school year is her first official year with us in our "Tiger Nation," as she affectionately refers to our school with our tiger mascot.  Dr. Dobson has already accomplished so much as she planned for the opening of school throughout the summer and has made connections with staff and students even in remote learning.  Dr. Dobson has quite an accomplished career as well.  Read more in the recent WSFCS News Headline:
